Summary
A visit from Leonard's mother delights Sheldon and horrifies Leonard.

- Leonard, Penny and Sheldon are watching The Grinch.

- Penny and Leonard are decorating the Christmas tree and exchange their childhood memories about Christmas. Sheldon comments.
- When Penny asks Sheldon to help, he wants to put up a bust of Isaac Newton on the tree.
- When Sheldon mentions that Leonard's mother will turn up the next day, Penny is surprised that Leonard didn't tell her.

- The guys, Penny and Leonard's mother are having a Christmas dinner. Leonard learns that his parents are getting divorced.

- Penny asks Leonard's mother how she feels about her divorce. They decide to stop for a drink.

- Penny and Leonard's mother are bonding while getting drunk.
VIII. Living room
- A drunk Penny and Leonard's mother turn up to ask Leonard why he didn't tell his mother about his relationship with Penny. When Sheldon turns up, Leonard's mother kisses him.

- Leonard, Sheldon and a hung-over Penny and Leonard's mother are driving to the airport.

Title
Maternal refers to Leonard's mother visit. Congruence is when things come together, which in this case refers to Beverly getting closer to Penny (and getting a little too close to Sheldon!)
