Doppler effect

The name for the apparent shifting of frequency of waves (of sound, for example, or light) depending on whether the source of the waves is moving toward or away from the observer. Sheldon went to Penny's Halloween party in a costume which depicted the Doppler effect with a series of black and white stripes. Everyone thought he was dressed as a zebra, much to his dismay.
