A research assistant in the particle physics lab of the Physics Department at Caltech.
He has a double major in physics and theater from MIT but his "bourgeois parents" pushed him into doing physics.
In the episode "The Loobenfeld Decay" Toby spends a weekend at the apartment of Leonard and Sheldon playing the role of Sheldon's imaginary, drug addicted cousin Leo. Sheldon invented Leo to create an "un-unravelable" lie why he and Leonard couldn't come to see Penny performing in a musical production of Rent.
Sheldon believes that his acting abilities are really poor and that Toby's parents "made the right decision".
