Penny is Leonard and Sheldon's new neighbor across the hallway and is, as described by Wolowitz, a "cheesecake-scented goddess." She is a beautiful waitress at the local Cheesecake Factory. She is also writing a semi-autobiographical story about a girl from Lincoln, Nebraska, who travels to Los Angeles to become an actress but ends up working at the Cheesecake Factory.
The reason Penny moved in next door is that she recently split with her boyfriend of four years, Kurt, and was thrown out of their place. She says she still loves him even though he lied and cheated on her. She is messy and disorganized but appears to like it that way. She is not intellectually gifted but does have a lot of common sense and a knowledge of pop culture.
Whenever Penny goes on a rebound relationship, she picks up an attractive man and then has 36 hours of meaningless sex over the course of a weekend; afterward, the relationship deteriorates. She also has said that she likes to "initiate," rather than have men "initiate" it for her (0203). Previously, it was revealed that Penny liked to have sex in unusual locations (such as a Subway sandwich shop.) She is better at the video game Halo 3 than Sheldon which aggravates him especially when Penny teases him about it. She also once becomes addicted to online gaming, to the point of ignoring her friends and calling Sheldon at all hours for advice (0203). She has her first date with Leonard after saying why she wants "to date a guy who truly cares for me" to which Leonard responds "What about me?" Before the date, Leonard gives Penny a very passionate kiss. The two have a successful first date, but Penny is worried after she lies to Leonard about graduating from community college. Leonard eventually learns about this from Sheldon, but makes matters worse when he tries to tell Penny it's not a big deal. After a few fairly meaningless dates with very different men such as dumb pretty boy Eric, brilliant handsome physicist Dave Underhill and comic-book store owner Stuart, she nearly had sex with her always caring and cared for friend Leonard when his mother comes to visit him, but the idea of her having sex with him just to overcompensate her lack of fatherly love during childhood spoils the moment. A few months later, when Leonard has to go to the North Pole for three months with Sheldon, Howard and Raj, Penny realizes she was harboring deep feeling for him all the time. Upon his return, she immediately and passionately kiss him on her doorstep and subsequently she starts what it seems as a pretty healthy relationship which they are enduring to date. Penny's screen name in the game Age of Conan hints at the possibility that Penny is a nickname for Penelope.

Penny's last name has not yet been revealed on the show, although she's not keeping it a secret from her friends. Leonard, for example, has seen her mail on a number of occasions (often when he intentionally intercepts it to create an excuse to go over to her apartment). He signed for a delivery for her (0102), as did Sheldon (0218).
